Je Suis Charlie – I Am A Writer – Vive La Liberte….

Voltaire believed, “I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.” As a member of a free society, I agree – I believe in truth and freedom of expression – Vive la Liberte! I am a writer – I can only speak my truth. As anyone who knows me can attest – I hate politics and religion and take great pains not to get involved. Over the centuries, too many have used politics and religion to their own ends. Even Pope Francis has recently condemned his cardinals for being hungry for personal power…these men who have sworn allegiance to their God. http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/dec/22/pope-francis-scathing-critique-vatican-officials-curia-speech

I believe that people have the right to think and live as they wish – as long as they do not force their beliefs on me, and do not infringe on the rights of others to live as they choose.  Live and let live, has always been a motto of mine…

I’m the person who was inspired to do a marathon – completed the Honolulu one – as a reaction to the Boston marathon bombings – my attitude to the terrorists was – Not only have you not made me scared, you cowardly bastards, you’ve inspired me to do something I always thought was stupid. (Who would bother walking/running 26 miles when you have a perfectly good car in your garage!) http://yvonnemcleod.com/my-first-last-and-only-marathon-has-been-completed/

Today, I am equally enraged by the slayings of innocent people in Paris at the offices of Charlie Hebdo, a satirist magazine that lampoons every religion/all politics – their crime – either to be in the wrong place at the wrong time or have drawn cartoons depicting a dead man.  The pen will always be mightier than the sword – words and images linger – mad men with automatic guns and blunt knives may create terror and inspire idiots to follow in their wake, but goodness, justice and love will always prevail. It has to…these are the ones who died…http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2900519/Cartoonists-mocked-Islam-refused-threatened-Quranic-law-killed-Charlie-Hebdo-massacre-terrorists-asked-name.html

The magazine’s website has three words – Je suis Charlie… http://www.charliehebdo.fr/index.html  this has been the rallying call to millions on social media across the world… nous somme Charlie – we are Charlie – we – as a – world will not be silenced…we will go down fighting…Evil has always tried to make a stand – it has always failed…due to the love, joy, and dreams of the common man…

I was so touched by the vision, across Europe, of normal people gathering in public places, united by their grief and horror, holding up pens and notebooks to the Heavens…truth can never be silenced…for images from Europe…http://www.theguardian.com/world/2015/jan/07/rallies-charlie-hebdo-paris-london-solidarity-grief

I don’t know what the answer is – I don’t know what will happen – I do know that we must keep speaking our truth and stand up for what is right…that we cannot let these monsters make us afraid…we must continue to live our lives, our dreams, and not let fear dictate our actions – either inner demons or the ones who attack coffee shops, schools, and hospitals…

Yes, it’s easy for me to say, in my comfy apartment in Los Angeles, so far removed from the horrors of the world, and I’m not, normally, one for violence, but – if any terrorist crosses my path on the ground or in the air, I will not go quietly and will take you down if I can….I am from Glasgow – I’m from the city where common men ripped terrorists from their fiery jeep, that had just plowed through the main doors of Glasgow airport, and beat them up for daring to disrupt their summer holidays….love Billy Connolly’s take on this…https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7gMJBQoHJ4E&list=RD7gMJBQoHJ4E#t=51

So, I have no words of wisdom, beyond – send light, love and healing to Paris….and pray for those souls who have the courage and passion to speak their truth, when their lives are on the line to do so…follow your dreams and let no one stop you from being the best, most courageous, version of yourself…

The photograph of this article is taken from the journal I bought today, just after I heard about the atrocity in Paris … “True courage is in facing danger when you are afraid,” so said L. Frank Baum…taken from the Wizard of Oz…Be brave – move onwards and upwards, my friends….Yxxx
